THE ADMINISTRATIVE ROUTE

The Italian citizenship iure sanguinis must, in principle, be claimed administratively.

There are two options to start the administrative procedure for verifying Italian citizenship:

At the Italian Municipalities

Even if it is the quickest option, it requires applicants to reside in Italy.

This option is recommended for Italian descendants who urgently need to be declared Italian and who are also available to reside in Italy during their administrative procedure.

At the Italian Consulates abroad

Citizenship can also be claimed in the Italian consular network around the world. By law, the deadline for the analysis of the request by consulates is up to 730 days, but unfortunately these deadlines are usually not complied with, and in some cases the waiting time exceeds 10 years. This option is recommended for descendants who do not have an urgent need to be declared Italian and do not have availability to travel and reside in Italy. If the waiting time makes no difference, this is the indicated option.
